Efficient microfluidic particle separation arrays

چکیده

Microfluidic particle separation arrays are capable of passive sorting of microparticles or cells by size while avoiding blockage. Despite the usefulness of boundaries for concentration and parallel integration of arrays, separation efficiency is severely degraded in the areas adjacent to the boundaries due to the aberrant fluid flow found there. This letter shows how to eliminate this problem by modifying the boundary interface. At each row the boundary is moved by a specific amount to ensure a linear change in flux from row to row, which leads to uniform flow patterns and improved separation characteristics throughout the array. © 2009 American Institute of Physics. Dielectrophoretic Characterization of Colloidal Particles Using Angled Microelectrode Arrays

This paper will present a characterization of a microfluidic device with embedded angled microelectrode arrays for the continuous flow-through dielectrophoretic separation of particles. The operation of the device is demonstrated using samples of colloidal latex spheres, achieving 100% particle deflection with low operating voltage of 10V. This characterization is essential for dielectrophoreti...

Anisotropic permeability in deterministic lateral displacement arrays.

We uncover anisotropic permeability in microfluidic deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) arrays. A DLD array can achieve high-resolution bimodal size-based separation of microparticles, including bioparticles, such as cells. For an application with a given separation size, correct device operation requires that the flow remains at a fixed angle to the obstacle array. We demonstrate via expe...

Towards the Development of a Microfluidic Device for the Separation and Isolation of Circulating Tumor Cells from Whole Blood Using Acoustophoresis

We present progress towards the development of a microfluidic device with a novel design that assists in the separation and isolation of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) using acoustophoresis. A unique design is being developed to maximize the ‘filtering’ capability of the microfluidic device to eliminate the need to lyse red blood cells prior to isolation of CTCs. COMSOL modeling has allowed for...

Microfluidic Device for Continuous Particle Separation Using Hydrodynamic Filtration

A size-dependent particle separation (classification) is one of the most important procedures in biochemical, environmental, or medical analyses and their applications. However, the smaller particle size or the smaller size difference makes the particle classification difficult. The Lab-on-a-Chip concept have encouraged the miniaturization of various separation or selection methods for small pa...

Control of Interparticle Spacing Using Structured Microfluidic Channels

We report a technique for controlling interparticle spacing and position for inertially-focused particles at high concentrations using structured microfluidic channels. Particle control in flow holds many applications in the development of more efficient microfluidic platforms such as in particle encapsulation for droplet microfluidics, particle separation techniques, and high-throughput flow c...
